New Front-of-Package Label Regulations

Health Canada announces updates to the food labelling requirements to mitigate health risks associated with foods high in sodium, sugar, or saturated fats. These foods must add specialized indicators to the front of the label.

The new requirements must be implemented by January 1st, 2026 to ensure compliance.

  • Foods high in saturated fats, sugars, and fats are to display a front-of-package symbol indicating “high in” nutrients. This indicator must contain English/French text, a nutrient that exceeds the maximum, and a “Health Canada” call-out.

  • The indicator must appear on products that meet/exceed the set levels of sodium, sugar, and saturated fats. Certain exclusions apply.

  • Manufacturers must ensure that the indicator is compliant with size, location, and language requirements. Interested in learning more? Contact us today.
